Autumn Term

Autumn Term

This week we wrote letters to Father Christmas. We found his address and we sent them off to him!

We had loads of fun walking to the postbox. Let's hope he reads them all in time for Christmas.

Christmas Lunch!

We enjoyed Christmas lunch on Wednesday 15th. We had turkey and all the trimmings and a yummy Christmas cupcake.

In Maths we have been learning to use addition number sentences to use greater than, less than and equal to symbols. The crocodile mouth helped us to understand the the larger number eats the smaller number.

We have been learning the Christmas story in English lessons. We have sequenced the events in different steps and we rewrote the Christmas story. Have a look at our brilliant work!

This week in we have been focusing on subtraction using part part whole models. We have been learning to find a part to help us write the number sentences. We learnt that when we subtract we always start with the biggest number (the whole number) and take away a part. We use pictorial representations to help us.

We have also been learning to use number lines to subtract within 10. We have focused on small steps to help us work out subtraction sentences.

1. Start with the number at the begging of the number sentences.

2. Look at the second number to know how many jumps we need to go backwards- down the number line so they number is getting smaller.

3. The number we land on is the answer. We also did this practically with large numicon.

This week our elf delivered out beautiful Christmas tree. Our first challenge was to decorate it! We loved putting decorations onto the tree.

Seahorse class named our Elf Tinsel Tinker and he has been giving us letters each day with a different act of kindness.

Geography and Computing

In Geography lessons we have been continuing to learn about the world. We have used beebots to program and debug algorithms (giving instructions) to get to different destinations on a map.

This week in Maths we have introduced subtraction. We have been learning to tell subtraction stories with our talk partners using practical objects. We have learnt how to write a subtraction number sentence using symbols. Take a look at some of our practical work this week!

For our homework over the last couple of weeks we have been creating posters about different animal types. They look amazing and have lots of facts. We have displayed them in our classroom for everyone to see!

Aladin Pantomime

We had a great time watching the pantomime! We really enjoys the singing and dancing and had great fun joining in.

This week in English we have been focusing on the book 'Penguin' by Polly Dunbar.

We have learning to rewrite the story using pictures as prompts.

We have focused on including adjectives to describe.

Next week we will be innovating (changing) the characters to create our own story.

Have a look at the story using the below video.

Our New Topic is Amazing Animals! We have been learning the different continents in the world! To start off our topic we brainstormed what we already knew. Seahorse class knew lots about the world. We will be learning to name the 7 continents and link them to different landscapes, whether they are hot or cold countries and the types of animals that might live there. We have enjoyed learning this song at school.

This week we Maths we have been learning to use addition sentences to compare. However, we have challenged ourselves as it involved a two step process to find our answer.

Our working wall ball shows some examples of some questions we have been working on.

This week we have been learning to use tens frames confidently to add two numbers together within 10. We used different counters to help us recognise the two numbers and work out how many counters we had altogether.

We have also been learning to use addition stories this week. We have created our own stories about ice creams, ladybirds and butterflys!

Parent Event 15.11.21

Thank you to everyone that attend Seahorses Active Learning Parent Event! It was great to invite you into our classroom and for the children to show off their learning environment and amazing classroom! We had so much fun learning in a fun and active way. We hope you all learnt lots of new ways to engage your child in learning at home.

Remembrance Day

This week we have been learning about Remembrance Day. We know that it is on the 11th day of the 11th month at 11am.

We also learn that poppies are worn on Remembrance Day because they are the flowers which grew on the battlefields after the First World War ended.

We created our own poppies in school!

This week Seahorses have been learning number bonds to 10. We learnt a rhyme to help us to remember which 2 numbers make 10 when added together!

We have also been learning how to represent number bonds to 10 in different ways. We have focused on part part whole models, tens frames and bar models!

We are now able to write number sentences for our number bonds to 10!

Once we were confident we worked independently!

This week in science we have been learning to sort animals into groups by identifying and naming them! We learnt there are 6 animals groups:

We learnt to sort them into groups and identify their characteristics to help us sort them.

In English, we have been learning about adjectives (describing words). We have looked at the story 'The Wild Things' and used the pictures to write descriptive sentences.

During Autumn 1 we have learnt all about ourselves through our Topic 'This is Me!'

Look at our fantastic Art!

Our new class name is Seahorses. One of the first things we did on our transition day was create our own Seahorses. They are up in our classroom for everyone to see who we are!

What have Seahorses been learning in Maths this half term?

This half term we have been focusing on Place Value to 10 as well as Addition and Subtraction to 10.

We have been learning to represent numbers in different ways. Have a look at our Working Wall!

Take a look at this video to explain some of our learning and how you can recap place value at home.

We have also been looking at Addition and Subtraction to 10 using Part Part Whole Models.

Our STEM sentences have been;

_____ is a part, _____ is a part, _____ is the whole number.

The STEM sentence for the below Part Part Whole Model would be;

4 is a part, 2 is a part, 6 is the whole number.

We then worked on using colour codes to write addition sentences. This really helped us to see how the numbers can be swapped around to make fact families.

What have Seahorses been learning in English?

This half term we have been focusing on creating fantastic sentences using a writing checklist. We have used the below symbols to help us to write.

Our focus stories have been:

You Choose

Funny Bones

The Colour Monster

PSHE- Jigsaw

This half term we have introduced the children to our Jigsaw scheme. We have met Jigsaw Jack and introduced him to our class.

Meet Jack! We love having him in our classroom- he stays in our reading area and we often read him stories.

This half term we have been focusing on 'Being Me' and understanding who we are, our rights within our classroom and outlining rules and expectations to become effective learners.

We have all signed our Jigsaw Charter which outlines our expectations. We recap this every time we have a Jigsaw lesson and use the charter in other areas of our learning too.

We have a class floor book which contains all of our learning in PSHE this half term. We have learnt to be Bucket Fillers! Please watch the video below of the story we focus upon in school.
