This week we created our own fossils.
Cast fossil - A cast fossil is made when minerals and sediment fill in the spaces left behind when an organism buried in the rock has rotted away and disappeared. This makes an exact replica (or cast) of the original organism.
We don't have hundreds of thousands of years to wait so we used plasticine, shells and plaster of paris.
Amber Fossil - An amber fossil is made when tiny creatures become trapped in sticky tree resin. Over many years, this becomes hard and creates a stone called amber. You may find the preserved remains of an organism in some pieces of amber.
We don't have hundreds of thousands of years to wait so we used gummy bears and orange jelly.
