Welcome to Meerkat Class
We hope you enjoy looking at what we have been doing and finding out about what we have learnt.
Week 7 - Computing
Meerkat class are having an absolutely wonderful time producing stop motion animations using Purple Mash.
Week 6 - Making our polar bears
This week we made our polar bears. We had great fun sculpting our polar bears out of newspaper and masking tape. Then, we used Modroc to cover them. It was fascinating watching them slowly take shape. Next week we will be painting them. The finished polar bears will be on display for Parents' Evening.
Week 5
This week, we have begun writing our speeches in English. We have chosen a range of topics and written a persuasive speech to perform to the class. Some of our topics include 'why dogs make the best pets', 'why we should protect endangered species', 'why we shouldn't litter' and 'why geckos make the best pets'.
On Thursday, we also had our Parent Event. We have been learning about Yayoi Kusama's artwork this half term and had a go at creating a meerkat using her iconic style of bright colours and dots. Thank you to all the adults who came to join us for this afternoon - the children had a fantastic time!
Week 4
In Art, we have been looking at how art can express and raise awareness for global issues. We looked at the artist Faith Bebbington and explored her wonderful polar bear creation. This week, we worked in groups to make a 3D sculpture of a polar bear using newspaper and tape.
In PSHE, we looked at why we have rules and how they keep us safe from harm, give us the right to be treated fairly and the right to be heard in all parts of society. We recognised that there are rules everywhere we go, e.g. the beach, the zoo, the airport, school and home.
In small groups, we chose one or two items and created a game. We established the rules for playing the game and a scoring system. Most of all...we had great fun playing
Week 3 – Air Resistance - In Science this week, we tested the parachutes that we had made the week before. We used the wall bars in the Sports Hall as they are the highest place we could think of. We tested each parachute three times to make it a fair test and to make sure we did not get any anomalies in our results. We discovered that the larger parachutes fell the slowest as their large surface area created more air resistance which slowed the fall. On the other hand, the smallest parachutes fell fastest due to their smaller surface area.
Weeks 1 & 2
We have all had an amazing start to Year 5. We have started our topics for Art, Science and History. In Art, we have looked at polar bears and had a go at sketching them. In Science, we talked about gravity and air resistance for the unit Forces. In PE, we explored symmetrical and asymmetrical balances in gymnastics.
