Friday

We arrived safely back at school and the whole year group went out to spend some time together in the shade at the back of the field. There were lots of excited squeals as we went round the corner and saw the other half of the year group. Then there was time for a final biscuit and drink break before greeting our families and giving them big hugs.

It’s been an amazing week with the children and, as I hope you can tell from the photos, the children have had a fab time. We hope you have enjoyed seeing all the photos on the blog and that they can act as a great reminder for the children. I’m sure the children can give you even more information about each activity and recall many extra happy memories too.

Have an amazing weekend and we’ll see you all on Tuesday :-)

We are on our way home! Sad to leave but also happy to see our friends and family

Ennion Group - Disappearing Animals

Our final activity was Disappearing Animals. We learnt that sadly some animals are becoming endangered and others have become extinct. Some of this is due to human actions and some due to being hunted by other animals. We discussed the different types of animals we have seen around Flatford and considered what might be found on a field compared to a forest area.

We used nets to collect the creatures, a spoon to put them in a pot, and a chart to identify them. We loved finding all the creatures and seeing how many we could find. The millipedes and centipedes were very exciting finds.

Bingley Group - Pond Dipping

Bingley’s last activity this week was ‘Secret Ponds’. We were lucky to be able to use the pond outside The Mill. Earlier in the week, we had spotted a school of Minnows in the shallows so we were hopeful we might catch some.

We began in the classroom by classifying different animals. We thought of our own classification keys first: land, air, soil, water, furry, spiky, big, small etc. Then we learnt the scientific names: invertebrates, vertebrates, mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles etc.

After this, it was time to head outside to the pond. We worked in groups and used a net to sweep the pond to see what we could find. We then chose our favourite creatures we caught to bring back to the class and look at them under a microscope. Freddie was very patient and skilful with the net and managed to catch a minnow, which he named Steve!

Mammal Trapping

Yesterday was the dress rehearsal, so it doesn’t count that we didn’t find anything. Today was the real deal. We went down to our traps hopeful that we would find something and…….

*drum roll take 2*

we did!!!!!

Unfortunately, the crows and squirrels had found most of the traps. However, one trap (Millie and Evie’s) remained intact and was a little heavier than the day before.

We gathered around, full of anticipation, and opened up the trap. This may come as a surprise but there was a huge cheer when we saw some poo in the trap! Moments later, a small brown creature popped out and began jumping around the bag. It was a mouse! To say we were excited was an understatement. Check below for the video of the release.

Breakfast

With our cases all packed and lunches made, we tucked into the final breakfast of our stay.
As you can see, we are all smiles still and everyone is happily tucking into either their toast, cereal, cooked breakfast or all 3!
