Autumn 1

Week 8 - In Art we followed in the footsteps of Yayoi Kusama a Japenese artist who uses spots to create amazing art work. The children worked with so much focus and I am incredibly proud of their creations. In PE we practiced our jumping skills - over hurdles, off a bench and on spots. Lots of action (blurry) photos! We sat beautifully and listened carefully in the 2 John's assembly about internet safety. In Computing we continued our focus on typing and practised typing our name and spelling our Common Exception Words onto a word doc.

Week 7 - Our last Science lesson on our 5 senses was focussed on the sense of touch. We had different items like pasta, rice, lego and flour in balloons and had to guess what was in them just through the sense of touch. In DT we used our designs to make a chair for our teddy bear. We found it a bit tricky but we persevered showing determination and resilience. Our Forest School focus this week was Monkey Puzzle by Julia Donaldson. We helped little monkey by finding pictures of his mummy hiding around the forest, we made woodland butterfly's and made homes for our pipe cleaner caterpillars, as well as the usual fun of climbing trees, bug hunting and exploring with our friends.

Week 6 - We have been practising our number formation by racing toy cars round a number race track, making the number in multilink and playdoh and drawing it in glitter, sand, shaving foam and flour. In Science continuing our learning of the five senses we explored the sense of smell. We had covered pots of different smells (coffee, marmite, thyme, rosemary, lavender, soap, vinegar, lemon, cinnamon, basil) and had to match the smell to the correct picture and decide our favourite and least favourite smell. In computing we worked in pairs to type our name, the alphabet and a simple sentence on a document on the chrome books. We learnt the different keys on the keyboard like caps lock, return, space bar and backspace. Some typed names got accidentally deleted before I could get a photo but everyone had a go and absolutely loved it.

Week 5 - In Maths we worked in pairs using counters to explore fact families and we challenged ourselves to identify and write all the number sentences. In History we had a special visitor (Mrs Hale - school governor) to tell us all about life when she was a child in the 1960's. We explored some toys, money, books and phones from her childhood and then sorted toys into 'old' and 'new'. To help our fine motor skills we each got our own pot of PlayDoh and we really enjoyed exercising our fingers during Doh Disco. Finally, in Science we explored the sense taste. We tried different foods - lemons, spinach, spicy crisps, salty pretzels, marmite and grapes - there were some funny faces when trying the lemon! We also enjoyed vegetable painting, making pretend food from playdoh and setting up cafes, picnics, fish & chip stalls and pizza stalls on the carpet.

Week 4 - Continuing our 5 senses topic in Science, we have been focusing on sound this week. We went on a sound hunt, put on a concert for our friends, created different rhythms and tried using sign language to show the first letter of our name. Linking with music, we explored different musical instruments and listened to the different sounds they made. To help our fine motor skills we explored mark making with chalk on the playground and created some amazing spirals. In DT we focussed on our cutting and gluing skills and the children were very proud to showcase their junk modelling. On Thursday the children paired with a year six to walk to the Church for our Harvest Festival. I was incredibly proud of Flamingos walking sensibly, chatting away to their new year six friend and sitting quietly during the service. Finally, our Forest School focus this week was Julia Donaldson's Room on a Broom. We made witches potions, magic wands and pretend camp fires. Wow what a super busy week!

Week 3 - In Science we have been learning about the 5 senses with this week focusing on Sight. We all imagined what we would miss most if we lost our sense of sight. We explored different activities - using different colours to create artwork, an outdoor scavenger hunt, wearing a blindfold to explore the feely box to guess the object without our sense of sight, and the favourite was definitely the blackout tent and torches to make shadow finger puppets! In RE we explored the Christian belief that God created the world. Each of us drew a picture to show one of the days of Creation, and we especially enjoyed acting out Day 7, when God rested! In DT we are learning to identify and compare natural and manufactured structures and we got to make some! Creations include a football pitch, maracas and a walkie talkie! Finally, in Forest School our book focus was The Snail and the Whale and we enjoyed creating the snail's trail in the forest as well as swinging, finding ladybirds and playing with our friends!

Week 2 - In PE this week we focused on ball skills, developing our dribbling skills and accuracy when rolling the ball. In History we loved sharing our baby photos. We played guess the baby and then enjoyed looking in a mirror and identifying how we've changed. I was SO impressed with how many children knew and remembered their date of birth - well done Flamingo class! On Friday we had a special assembly about First Aid as it's National First Aid day on Saturday. In class we discussed and practiced some first aid skills. We loved practicing phoning 999 and 112 to call an ambulance and putting a plaster on our pretend injuries.

Week 1 - What an amazing first week in year one! In English we listened to the story 'You Choose' and we wrote our own sentence about what we would choose to see if we could see anything - some fantastic imaginations! In Maths we worked in pairs to use different resources to represent numbers to 10. In Forest School we started in the log circle and listened to the Forest School rules (the most important being to have fun!) Then we explored, climbed trees, collected hundreds of apples, found ladybirds and other insects and so much more. Our focus this week was Stickman by Julia Donaldson (our year 1 author) and we made our own stick people, and showed them to our friends in the log circle. Wow what a busy week!
