02.07.26 - D.T.
In D.T., we designed and built pneumatic devices using a strong frame, two pistons and cylinders connected by tubing. We discovered how air pressure can be used to create movement, making a lever arm move up and down as the pistons pushed and pulled in turn. It was challenging in places and we needed team work to make it a success. We learnt a lot from this hands-on lesson as it brought our learning to life.

01.07.26 - Geography
Festival of Fieldwork 2026As part of our Festival of Fieldwork, Year 4 investigated the enquiry question: 'Where do our local streets get their names from?' Using maps, we followed a route around our local area, recording street names and taking photographs along the way. Back in the classroom, we used Digimap to trace the origins of these names and discovered that many are named after places in the Lake District in north-west England. By comparing maps of the two areas, we noticed how different the landscapes are, with the Lake District's fells, valleys, rivers and large lakes contrasting with the flatter landscape of Great Notley. It was a fantastic opportunity to develop our map-reading and fieldwork skills while learning more about the geography of our local area.

In Science, we have been learning about the human digestive system and how food is broken down through a process called peristalsis. Last lesson, we learned about the chain of organs that make up the digestive system. Today, we explored their functions by creating a practical model.
We demonstrated how teeth and saliva break down food, how the stomach churns it, and how the small and large intestines absorb nutrients and water. This hands-on activity helped us develop a better understanding of how the body processes food, leaving waste behind. It was a fun and memorable way to bring our learning to life.

25.03.26 - Art - Take One Piece
Year 4s have been exploring colour and light with Dale Chihuly. He is a famous artist who makes incredible sculptures out of glass by using bold colours and curving shapes that look like things from nature, such as flowers or sea shells. We have been inspired by work and had a magical art lesson creating our own cangle light holders.

23.03.26 - Science - Learning about Living Things and Conservation
Sloth Class had a fantastic time exploring Maisie’s Garden and the pond area as part of our Science topic on habitats. We became real nature detectives, carefully investigating the pond and discovering a whole range of fascinating wildlife.
We were excited to find frogspawn and tadpoles, and even spotted a newt swimming through the water! As we looked closer, we also found leeches, water mites, different larvae, and even a water spider gliding across the surface.
It was amazing to see how many living things call the pond their home. This hands-on experience helped us understand how habitats support different creatures and why it’s so important to take care of our natural environment.

10.03.26 - History and our time at Colchester Castle.
Year 4 have been learning about the Romans and how their invasion of Britian has left a lasting legacy in England. We are very lucky to have an excellent source of history near us - Colchester Castle. This was the Roman's first capital. The invading army drove the local Celt tribe - the Trinovantes - off the land and used captured Celt slaves to build the prestigous Temple of Claudius. It was here, on this site, that the Roman's first felt the heat of Boudica and rebellion. We loved exploring both our local history and finding out more about both the Celts and the Romans in Britain.

Today, we explored how sound travels through different mediums. We used our previous learning to understand how sound waves travel fast through a solid because the particles are tightly bonded. Therefore, the sound wave (or energy) travels through the solid quickly.

Wednesday 12th November - Music and learning how to play the notes B, A, G, C and D.
We have been learning how to correctly hold a recorder and use the correct finger placement to play Claire du Lune. Today, we learnt two new notes, C and D, and where they sit on the stave. Listening and playing the different notes helped us explore mthe different pitch of the notes. For our Christmas Performnace, we are now playing Jingle Bells which uses all five notes and a range of different values.
