1/7/26 - Geography
Where do street names in the locality come from?
As part of our Festival of Fieldwork, Year 4 investigated the enquiry question: 'Where do our local streets get their names from?' Using maps, we followed a route around our local area, recording street names and taking photographs along the way. Back in the classroom, we used Digimap to trace the origins of these names and discovered that many are named after places in the Lake District in north-west England. By comparing maps of the two areas, we noticed how different the landscapes are, with the Lake District's fells, valleys, rivers and large lakes contrasting with the flatter landscape of Great Notley. It was a fantastic opportunity to develop our map-reading and fieldwork skills while learning more about the geography of our local area.

Today, we made pneumatic cars to practise our finger fluency. We blew up balloons which trapped the air particles. As the air escaped at force it made the car move along.

In science, we have been learning about the digestive system. We made a replica of the digestive system to show how the food moves through.

4.6.26 - TT Rockstar Day
We had great fun today dressing as rockstars to compete for TImes Table Rockstar Day. We enjoyed lots of competitions, games and singing.

We had a great morning with our grown ups applying our joining skills to make a shell structure for na animal habitat.

In preparation for making our shell structures, we had a lesson on finger fluency. We practised making slots, tabs, feet and flanges as well as scoring the cardboard to help us bend it.

8.5.26 Sir David Attenborough
To celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday, we created our own wildlife videos. We used vocabulary that we have learnt in science to describe the animals and did our best impressions of him.

Today, we practised our putting skills in golf. We made our own crazy golf course to practise our aiming.

24.4.26 - Take One Piece
Today, we tried to create more pictures in the style of Jordi Koalitic. We used plastic bottles, books and polystyrene to add effects to our photos.

22.4.26 - Music
In music, we listened to Unsquare Dance by Dave Brubeck which has an ostinato (repeating pattern) that runs throughout the piece of music. We used the percussion instruments to make our own ostinatos.

16.4.26 - Take One Piece
For this term’s Take One Piece in Art we are studying photographer Jordi Koalitic who thinks creatively using props and forced perspective to create seemingly impossible pictures!

23.2.26 - Take One Piece - Dale Chihuly
For our Take One Piece project this term, we looked at America glass artist Dale Chihuly. We decorated glass jars with flora and fauna using acrylic paint to recreate his style of work. We put candles inside the jars which was extremely effective and they looked beautiful.

20.3.26 - Art
In Art, we have been looking at plinths and how they are used to display a piece of art. We all made plinth people out of wire and material to show how anyone can be represented in a statue.

The children have been practising a range of songs and performed them beautifully.

10.3.26 - Colchester Castle
Today, Year 4 went to Colchester Castle as part of our history topic on the Romans. We had time exploring the museum, building a Roman Villa and even got to go down into the vaults of the castle.

5.3.26 - World Book Day
Today, we celebrated World Book Day so children came dressed as different characters and words. They had the opportunity to explore the word they dressed as, spent time reading in Maisie's Garden and enjoyed learning about Michael Morpurgo's War Horse.

In English, we looked at the story of Robin Hood. We made freeze frames of the key parts of the story.

We loved painting our clay tiles, don't they look good!

Today in art, we made clay fruit tiles. We practised using etching, scoring, sticking and blending to make pieces of different fruits.

Today we have been investigating how to make simple circuits with cells, wires, switches and lamps.

In English, we have been looking at performance poetry. We really enjoyed learning and performing poems. We particularly liked Strict by Michael Rosen.

18.12.25 - Music and Christmas Carol Concert
We are delighted that we were able to share our singing and recorder skills in a Christmas performance by our Year 4 pupils. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported our young performers.

Year 4 made traditional mince pies today as the fluency part of learning to make pastry and a festive treat. Net week, pupils will be creating their own version of a hand held sweet pastry for their final piece.

26.11.25 - P.E./History
Today, we combined History and P.E. and took part in The Olympic Games. We took part in chariot racing, discus, javelin, long jump, sprinting, archery and tug of war. We thought it was the best P.E. lesson ever!

Today we started our D.T. Topic of making mince pies. We spent some time looking at the features of mince pies and then tried some. We also tried jam tarts to give us more inspiration.

Today, we were investigating what happens to sound as it passes through solid, liquids and gases. We loved taking part in the experiments.

10.11.25 - Odd Sock Day
We celebrated Odd Sock Day as part of Anti-Bullying Week. We talked about what makes us unique and how we can use our voice for the 'Power of Good'.
6.11.25 - Art
For our Take One Piece project this term, we looked at Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama and created a piece inspired by her style. We used bright colours and repeated patterns, especially dots, to turn our class animal into something fun and eye-catching.
