This week in Science we created our own fossils.

Cast fossil - A cast fossil is made when minerals and sediment fill in the spaces left behind when an organism buried in the rock has rotted away and disappeared. This makes an exact replica (or cast) of the original organism.

We made our cast fossil using playdough. We pushed a shell into the playdough so that it made an imprint. We took out the shell then poured in plaster of paris. This left us with a cast of our shell.

Amber Fossil – An amber fossil is made when tiny creatures become trapped in sticky tree resin. Over many years, this becomes hard and creates a stone called amber. You may find the preserved remains of an organism in some pieces of amber.

We made our cast fossil using orange jelly to represent the resin and a sweet to represent the creature that was preserved in the resin.
