Art
In Art, we began our work on the author and illustrator Joe Todd-Stanton. Together we read his book, “Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx”. The children loved the story and we spoke about the connections to our Egyptian topic work. We sketched characters inspired by his work and began thinking about which we would like to model in clay.
English
Today in English we explored the use of inverted commas to add speech to our writing.
To try to remember all the rules of punctuating speech we think of making a sandwich.
The first slice of bread is the first inverted comma: “
The filling are the words the character says: “It’s over there
The closing punctuation is the sauce/condiment: “It’s over there,
The second slice of bread is the closing inverted comma: “It’s over there,”
The plate is the reporting clause and character name: “It’s over there,” muttered Helen quickly.
The children had great fun exploring speech using this analogy and working in groups on whiteboards.
